DV Housing First: Reducing the Likelihood of Shelter Use for Family Survivors of Domestic Violence

This project was a priority before the pandemic and remains viable today, if not more important than ever. NYC has seen a spike in domestic violence during the pandemic. And while this has been widely reported, we do not see any new solutions emerging.

This project addresses the needs of an identifiable population of NYC families that are at risk of homelessness, providing a short-term “bridge” to longer-term housing stability. The program would attempt to prevent shelter entry in the population either by providing the supports a family needs to stay stably housed when it is possible to have the offender leave the home OR by providing rapid re-housing when this is not possible.

In both cases, the DV service provider would continue to assist the family by helping them through the process of applying for a housing subsidy when needed and other services the family may need. Aligned with the mission of HOMEworks, the goal is to provide short-term supports to families experiencing DV that lead to long-term housing stability without entering shelter.
